Final Report on PLN

My Personal Learning Network has increased since I have gotten a phone that exhibits more technological advances. This phone has made it easier to learn quickly any information that I want to receive. Some of my PLN's have remained the same that I used before this class and before I got the phone I have now, but have changed in form (such as from a paper-back dictionary to one on my phone- although many times the paper back is more reliable). I have, however, been introduced to other learning programs that I can use in the future. Here are my PLN's:

thirtyone.com ...........I am a consultant for this business.
google.com...............I google a lot to find out information.
Gmail....................I receive e-mails from edm 310, leadership honor society
notifications, and Thirty-One through this.
Comcast.net..............I receive all of my other e-mails here such as school
related things, Focus on the Family, e-mails from family,
theknot.com e-mails, along with any other information.
Facebook.................I receive notifications through this, although it is not
one of my top PLN's.

Myspace..................similar to Facebook, although I only seek information occassionally through this.
Theweatherchannel.com.....................I use this a lot instead of the t.v. because I can easily access it on my phone.
Dictionary...............I have a dictionary on my phone which is very helpful.
Navigation...............I also have a navigation/GPS app on my phone.
USA web page.............Here I find all of my classes and information about them.
I also have access to PAWS, Foliotek, and other links
through this site.

Internet......................for anything I need to find out from particular stores (such as Best Buy for a camcorder), etc.
Television..................for news and any other information from commercials, etc.
People.....................people in general are my other PLN's. Many people know many different things. You just have to know who to go to.

Classroom Hack: Creating Postcards Using Student Work

POST:
Here is a quick way to let your students show off their artwork and get in a quick lesson on writing postcards. The picture above is a postcard I made in class from picture a student drew to go along with a media history assignment. I took the pictures and printed them onto card stock and cut them out. Then I had them write a postcard explaining the assignment and had them mailed. Soon the parents will get a surprise in the mail!

You can do the same thing with pictures of the students as well. Why not take a picture of the science experiment they are doing, the activity they are doing in their PE class, or them working on a computer? There is something special about receiving handwritten mail and it is even more special when it is from someone you love!

Please note: If you are using a laser printer you need it to heat up before running card stock in it. I print 25-30 blank pages first before I run the card stock through so it heats up enough that the toner sticks to the paper.

TEACHER POST SUMMARY #1:
The kids were asked to make a post card and the back of the post card the student wrote what the assignment was about. The card was then mailed to the students’ parents. The parents received in the mail something their children created as artwork for school and also a lesson on the purpose of the project.
MY RESPONSE #1:
This is a great idea! I will definitely keep it in mind to use for my future class. This is also a good way to keep the parents informed, and possibly strike the parents' interest to get more involved with their kids' school work. This seems like a project that will be good for many different age ranges also.

I Got Your PD Right Here!

I am receiving the best professional development I have ever experienced at school. I am "team teaching" a math class.

Math is definitely not my strength. I got through by following patterns. I am very good at identifying them. I am not good at being able to understand the "why" of math. Does it make you wonder why I was placed in a math class to team teach?

So, I find myself sitting in a class that I do not feel comfortable in. Not only am I unfamiliar with the objectives (even after reading/studying them over the summer) but with the vocabulary used. Students are expecting me to be able to help them identify why they don't "get" something. How can this be great professional development for me if I am not comfortable?

I have become a student again. I am learning the math concepts and definitions with the students. I ask more clarifying questions than they do. I am remembering my student roots, learning in a classroom.

The first full week I taught the math lessons. I wanted to pull my own weight and show that I could do the job. After teaching a lesson my teaching partner broke the lesson down for me and we talked about what I could have done to make it better. For some veteran teachers this would be a problem, but not for me. I know I am in over my head and I am grateful to have an experienced teacher help me out.

Although the team teaching has been difficult and we have not yet found our comfort zone with the shared responsibilities I would still say this has been successful for me. I am learning math and how to be a better teacher.

MY POST RESPONSE #1:
I have heard something like this said, "A great teacher is one who is always learning." I guess now you got a great chance to learn again! That is very helpful that there is another teacher in the class with you that is also a great help. As teachers, we will never be great at everything no matter how hard we try. This is why teaching is a team job, and it is not about one teacher being better than another at certain subjects. It is about helping one another reach what our best is as a person, even if we are not the "best" at everything. If we were the best at everything, where would our individualism in teaching be?

Should I Punish Students for Bad Behavior in Another Class?
My school has in-school suspension for students that behave inappropriately. I am not sure if it is because of not doing homework or because of what they have said or done. As the "computer" teacher I have never given any work for those students to complete, not much of a punishment if I let them use a computer in my opinion.

Today a teacher asked me if I ever sent any work for the student to do. When I replied I didn't she implied the student was "getting off" from doing the work in my class. My reply was that it would be hard for them to do the work in ISS when we are using the computers. I could figure out some make-work for them to do, but our administration is just as capable of that as me.

Thinking back over the exchange I have a different response. I really don't think I should punish a student by giving him/her make-work for improper behavior in someone else's class. What do you think?
MY RESPONSE #2:
I agree because even if they misbehave for someone else, does not mean that they do not have more respect for you. As teachers, I truly believe that if we respect our kids long enough, they will learn that respecting us is the best choice. And making them do punishment work for another class is not your job. It is the job of that teacher to handle it in his/her class, not in yours.

I Stayed

There are moments in your life that you know are once in a lifetime. The path you choose during this moment no doubt defines you in ways both known and unknown. Two months ago, an unsolicited phone call while driving down the expressway presented one of those moments.

As I’ve said before, I never wanted to be an educator but I became one with the hopes of changing lives and the educational system. The last ten years I’m not sure I’ve lived up to what I envisioned – I’m tired, frustrated, failing, and falling further behind. It is why this phone call was so enticing. It allowed me to say good-bye to public education and enter the for-profit arena with opportunities to impact school districts throughout the nation was so appealing.
My wife said go. My family said go. My friends said go. I even said go.
Despite this, I chose my path and stayed. I stayed because my heart is tied to the faces of learners, to the possibilities of public education, and to the changes we’ve yet to make. I couldn’t envision not being in a school on a daily basis. I couldn’t envision working from the outside.
And, to be honest, I stayed because something became really clear… I want to lead a school community – something I was vehemently against in much the same way I was with becoming an educator in the first place.
I surely don’t know what this decision means on many levels, but I know I’ll continue to have the chance to change lives and education from within… exactly where my heart and soul lies.
Thank you to all that mentored me through this process especially you, Brian.

Hello, I am a student in Dr. Strange’s EDM 310 class in Alabama. Although it was a hard decision to make, it very well might be the right one. As a future educator, your response to the question of whether to go or not was encouraging to me. I truly believe that educating will be difficult, but I am in this for the same reasons you are-to change lives…..and to change lives we must!

Once a “Cheater”, Always a “Cheater”
On November 27, 2010, in Leading, Teaching, Thought(ful)( less) Meandering, by ryanbretag

In the wee morning hours, you’ll find them sitting there huddled around a table or crouched around a tight spot on the floor. There they sit “sharing” their homework.
Yep, some call it sharing. Some call it comparing. Others call it helping. Many call it studying. Most educators would call it cheating.
This scene repeats itself at lunch and in the hallways during passing periods where it is often the sharing of what took place in earlier classes, what was on the quiz or test, and what was or wasn’t collected.

Maybe we should ban their ability to connect? Maybe we should ban their ability to socialize? Maybe we should ban their ability to talk? Maybe we should ban notebooks, paper assignments, and brains that store this information that can easily be transferred to other students?
Why do we barely bat an eye at this, yet we quickly jump to all the “cheating” that will take place if we allow mobile learning devices? Why do we support the banning of mobile learning devices to protect the sanctity of “your” classroom, yet the realities of what could take place with these devices is already happening in analog means?
Maybe we should ban bad assignments and poor assessments, and reallocate class time for collaboration, inquiry, project-based learning, and innovation. Maybe we should ban learning in isolation and keep in mind that today’s cheating is tomorrow’s collaboration.
Technology hasn’t created these problems. It has simply brought to light things that have always been there. It has simply brought these discussions back to the forefront of our thinking. Stop thinking it is a technology problem, get to the root of the problem, and utilize the knowledge we have about what it means to be a good educator.
MY RESPONSE #2:
Kayla says:

I definitely agree that educators along with parents have seen technological devices in classrooms as a cheating source, but fail to realize how much cheating is already happening without them (many times because “cheating” has so many wishy-washy definitions). Learning is wonderful, but what about offering new ways to learn by using our brains for real and not simply trying to memorize things from a book. I truly believe that the classroom should be more project and collaboratively driven because it seems that this is how we learn the best. Learn by doing, not by memorizing. Maybe if we do this, it will be tough to even want to “cheat” or find a way of doing it because we are learning out of the box.

What Has Changed Since 4th Grade?      What has changed was that we got netbooks. Getting netbooks was a very big and good change because we use them all of the time. We are also doing alot of project based learning this year. I have also noticed that we are having alot more fundraisers for our school.  We also haven’t had a field trip since fourth grade and I think that I learn better when we do something that is physical or like the real thing or see what it is like. That is what I think has changed.

Some of those changes seem to be a good thing! Being able to do projects is always helpful because you get hands-on experience and you get to create something yourself a lot of times. I learn better also by physically being able to do something or by having a visual to look at. I hope you are enjoying the changes sinces the fourth grade!

Additional Assignment #5

Who is the real author????   John T. Spencer

First of all, I have to say that this guy knows his students! I love that he truly understands who they are and what they are going through. He is certainly one who is concerned with their learning, but is also concerned with buildning a lasting relationship with his students. I like how he refers to computers as "pencils." Although they can serve some of the same purposes, they are on two completely different levels. This really caught my attention when he was referring to his students using their "pencil" drawings and making them more life-like and giving them detail by smearing the graphite among other things. The entire time I was reading this post I was imagining the beautiful pictures we have that are created by pencil (real ones) conforming into the media we see that is created by computer now. Although these two mediums may be different, it still allows the student to create whatever they desire. I also like how he does not necessarily defend his students, but he knows why they react certain ways and he knows how to control the classroom. The blog on "He Just Likes the Class for the Pencils," stood out to me the most in this respect. This really pointed out the fact that, yes, computers are fun to learn with, but the reason a kid should like the class is not because of the new media we present, but rather the understanding relationship they have with the teacher and the content they learn. It all begins with "R-E-S-P-E-C-T"!

ALEX (Alabama Learning Exchange):
ALEX is a free website that allows educators to gain resources that will help them in the classroom. This website has been given awards also. In 2007 they were awarded an Honorable mention, in 2008 the Digital Education Achievement Award, and in 2009 they were awarded the Digital Education Achievement Award again. After looking at this website I have found that it could be very useful to me as an educator. Many times we will probably run out of ideas for creative ways of learning for our students. At this site, we will be able to find activities, lesson plans, ask other teachers, and even view podcasts about certain things. I will definitely keep this site in mind as I continue into my career as and educator. I am happy for this site to be represented to me.

ALEX offers many resources for teachers. If you look at the tabs on the left-hand column, you will find many options for the educator to look into: courses of study, web links, lesson plans, search, personal workspace, professional learning, podcast treasury, and ALEXville. The Course of Study tab allows the educator access by grade level, course of study, key words, ALCOS standards, and it will show the web links and lesson plans that are available. The Web Links tab shows web resources for teachers, administrators, students, and it allows you to search, recommend, or report broken links. The Lesson Plans tab allows the educator to make their own lesson plans on this program by logging in, or one may be found by typing in the author, title, or school. The Search tab allows to search by keyword or narrow the search by choosing an ALCOS standard, lessons/activities, weblinks, lesson plans/resources. The Personal Workspace tab allows the user to log-in, create a personal workplace for storing and submitting lesson plans and teacher web pages. The Professional Learning tab gives a place to receive information about grant opportunities, ALEX/ Thinkinfinity Leadership, special education, library media, web devellopment, google tools, and many other available resources listed. The Podcast Treasury tab allows the user to choose by subject, view the top downloads, featured content, Alabama show cases, links, and content partners. ALEXville is a tab that consists of a globe surrounded by houses. The globe on this page leads to the blog for this site by simply clicking on it. You may click on any of the houses to lead to many different venues; Each house leads somewhere different. Progress on Final project

My group and I have decided meeting times for the Final project. We are also doing project 15 together and are recording it tomorrow. We plan on moving forward after project 15 is done and getting more ideas together on what we really want to do for project 16 as a group. We are working well together and plan to do so for the Final project.

Survey Summary

GOOGLE PRODUCED RESPONSES:
Google interpreted the test I made in percentage form and how many students that percentage interpreted into. According to what  I saw on Google forms, most students who took the survey did not do very well. Google showed that one of the questions was not responded to at all, and that a few were not responded to from very many people. There were a few questions that ranked above 50% of the students getting them correct.

MY RESPONSE:
I was a little surprised when I saw the results to the survey I created. I did not find the test very difficult for Education students simply because they are things we have learned recently. Many of the questions were common sense, but some are guaranteed to have to know a little more or have taken a specific class. I would still say, however, that I thought the percentage scores on this survey would be better.

Given that I am sure not all of the survey group I was given are Elementary Education majors, I can understand why the scores may not be what I expected. I also understand that my fellow students also had a lot of other surveys to fill out along with what is expected from them from their other classes, this class, and anything else they have going on out of school. I don think, however, that much of the survey was rushed through because there were other surveys to take, and if they were not an Elementary Education major, my survey does not affect them much in any way.  I also understand that we are not all in the same classes this semester (though many of us are) and that may have some to do with how much others know about Elementary Education.

As education students and being in the education building frequently, you should know someone who will be in the EDM 310 class in a future semester. For this post I would like you to come up with a project that you would find helpful for future EDM 310 students. The catch is that you must discuss this with a future EDM 310 student and ask what they think about this project and whether they will find it beneficial. This interview may be done on Skype, through a webcam, Flip cam, or any other device that may be embedded into your blog. This must be embedded into your blog.
Let me give you an example: For one of my projects I taught someone how to get started and stay on task in EDM 310. Although I conducted this video with my husband, it would be great for someone to do with a future EDM student for EDM. Shown below is the video I made with my husband. Your video must be done with a future EDM student and on any topic you would like that could become a future EDM project or blog. This video is for example purposes only.

Blog Post #11

Mrs. Cassidy is very positive about the use of technology in the classroom. She has used many different forms of media that she uses in the classroom with her students, even things such as Nintedo DS. I would probably use the techniques of a class blog and video. I like these because the kids are able to read what each other has written and also they are able to work as a group. One great thing I have seen throughout EDM is a class blog from a group of kids who wrote a story together as a class. Another class that I have seen throughout EDM did a video where they narrated also. I think that these things can be very javascript:void(0)valuable for the parents to see what their kids have done, and also for other classes to see examples of what a previous class has done. The impediments that could occur are typical computer difficulties that occur every once in a while, making sure it is kept private from predators, and watching the misconduct that can occur online. If these things are protected there will be great benefits such as keeping the kids interactive as a class, as out-of-the-box thinkers, and as teachers to other students as well. Let them be creative and explore! Imagination can be so beneficial with kids! And finding an interesting way to learn is vital to them.

Your blog was very good, but let me give you some tips: Although blogging is informal much of the time, try to watch your sentence structure, capitalization, and making your point clear. Great job though!

They tried to gain control over us in Lexington and Concord, but they have failed. The Patriots will stand tall and become the victors over England. If they strike again the ground will be drenched redder than coats of the horrid Lobster-Backs with their blood. It won’t matter if they come by night, day, land, or sea we will be the greater of the two.

This sounds great! When I read it I feel like it is a letter written by a patriot. You really used wonderful words and phrases that make this feel real, and bring the reader to a time in mind that feels like it is occurring at that very moment centuries ago. Great job!

What Has Changed Since 4th Grade
October 25, 2010 ~ 1 Comment

Additional Assignment #3

Sir ken Robinson Presentation on Changing Educational Paradigms

What do you think is the most important thing Sir Ken Robinson says in this presentation?
His questions to me are very important. "How do we educate our children...?" I think we can ask this question and let the remainder of the question be followed with many things. So we should always think about it, "How do we educate our children?"
Is there anything you disagree with in this presentation?
He made a lot of good points about ADHD being fictitious. I do not disagree with him entirely at all. I do believe that some kids do need drugs for ADHD, but maybe if they are first tested by seeing what interests them and how much attention they pay with those things then we will be able to see it on an individual basis also instead of handing out drugs to any kid who thinks he or she has ADHD.
How congruent are Sir Ken Robinson's positions with those which you are being taught in the College of Education. In other words, where is there agreement? Where is there disagreement?

They are very different because we are told we are becoming smarter the older we get, but he shows that divergent thinking happening more at younger ages and deteriorating the older we get. When we are older we are told mostly that there is only one answer to each question, while as a child a lot of times we freely think whatever we want to and use our imaginations widely. Although now we are moving towards thinking out of the box more and maybe our divergent thinking will increase.
What can you do to address the issues Sir Robinson raises?
Never stop thinking about what other answers there could be. Remember how we thought in Kindergarten and use our imagination continuously because that is where things are dreamed up. People who use this come up with the inventions we now use today, so why stop using our imaginations now?
What do you think of the presentation? If you had to do a presentation with others like this, what role on your team would you like most to play?
I thought the presentation was represented in a very interesting way and I really like how he used unique visuals. I really enjoyed the artists job, but I think I would be better at being the designer and coming up with the ideas of how to portray the presentation.

Morgan Bayda and Dan Brown:
Comparing my attitudes and experiences with those of Morgan Bayda
I understand that some of education needs to follow along with the information age. I think South is doing a good job now at offering classes that are online. Yes, it will be very hard to completely change over every University and make everything all about the Information Age and making everything online. I personally don't think that should happen. I do think that every class that can be offered online, should be offered online, but I also believe that students should be able to choose between a regular class and an online class. I have also had some experiences where I am trying my best to stay awake in class while the professor is teaching. However, I find that if I have a really good teacher, such as my Geography professor Mr. Sebastian, I look forward to class and I stay very interested because he makes learning understandable and fun. A lot of times, classes just need new teachers, sad but true. It's crazy that Dan Brown quit school because of that. That was his decision although I think it was crazy. It is said that these days everyone should have a degree in something so I hope he found some all online school somewhere to get a degree!

Tom Johnson's Don't Let Them Take the Pencils Home
I made a comment on this post also: I am also from EDM 310. I also like the approach of not arguing over the subject, but instead showing solutions. Kids always need a fun way to learn so they stay interested and continue working. However, if they do decide to go on a Hang Man trail, they are still learning some words! So learning is still there!

Two Questions That Can Change Your Life:
Reflect on the questions and how they affect me.
These two sentences are a great method of deciding what our main goal as teachers are. It is also great to motivate ourselves to do other things as well. I will probably ask myself these questions quite often and even come up with new ones throughout the years to help push me in the directions I desire to go and to inspire me continuously to do the things I know are my desires.
My Sentence:
" I strive to teach my students more than just things from a textbook, but also life lessons that will carry on throughout their lives always to be remembered."

Blog Post #9

"What I've Learned This Year" by Mr. McClung
In this post, Mr. McClung writes about a lot of things that he has learned from teaching this year. I believe that everything he wrote can be useful for teachers of any age and with any type of degree. I agree with everything that he said and I find it all very important.  The topics he discussed are to read the crowd, be flexible, communicate, be reasonable, don't be afraid of technology, listen to your students, and never stop learning. All of these are important in the job of becoming a teacher. I posted a comment to Mr. McClung saying that his focus on creating a relationship with our students by listening to them is one of the most important things that a teacher can do. The kids need to know that they can trust the teacher, not feel embarrased by the teacher, and to know that the teacher is always there to encourage and not discourage. Listening and encouraging goes a long way in a child's life!

Additional Assignment #2

How Kids Teach Themselves:  Answer these questions in your post. Identify any other issues that you think are important or useful to discuss.
1. What do you think? If learners are motivated, can they teach themselves?
With most things, yes I do think they can teach themselves.

2. If those motivated learners are kids, can they teach themselves?
Yes, with most things. We will all have things we may need additional help with, but if we are not
afraid messing up, I think we can learn a lot on our own.

3. What conditions are necessary for kids to teach themselves? For anyone to teach him or herself?
To be focused on it and dedicated to learning.

4. What role do computers and internet access play in the process?
Much of what we do not know, we can find out how to by searching for it on the computer.

5. What role does motivation, a desire to learn?
Motivation plays a large role. Without motivation it is hard to stay interested and focused on learning.

6. What roles do a problem, a question or multiple problems or questions play in the process?
There are always going to be questions. We can see things as merely problems, or we can see things as a challenge to figure out.

7. How do you motivate someone to learn?
 Encourage that person.

8. How are you motivated to learn?
By interest and knowing that even though some of it does not seem like it will be used, to recognize that we do not know everything about the future and there is a possibility that I may need to know those things later.

9. Can anyone who is not motivated to learn learn?
That would be very difficult to do, but a lot of people seem like they do learn out of "have to" not out of the motivation of "want to."

10. Do you teach yourself? When? Why?
Yes when I know that I can. If there is something I cannot seem to understand, that is when I ask other people questions. There may not always be someone to answer every question that I have whenever I need and answer. That is why much learning can be done on our own.

11. What role does a teacher (either answer generally or use a specific example) play in your learning?
I have to see things visually and have them explained to me clearly. Good teachers explain things well in ways that students can comprehend clearly and do things well. Not so good tend to strain our learning by not making things understandable when they very well could have been clearly defined. Also, If teachers are excited about learning, students have a better chance of getting excited about it to.

12. What is the most important idea, question or emotional response you take away with you as a result of watching this video?
That anyone can learn as long as we are given the right materials.

13. What other questions or issues are raised by this video that should be considered and discussed by aspiring teachers?
What other means can we give the students to learn by as individuals and as groups.

Blog Post #8

Richard Miller: This is How We Dream:
Richard Miller had a dream when he was younger. His dream was to work in a place of books.......and he did. He also wrote a book which, strangely enough is now on Amazon. He dreamed all his life to be working with books, and now times have changed. He is now working on a computer with "books" that are now online instead of with physical books. He goes on to talk about how the documents and other things are now on the computer and he shows how to use some of them and what they are used for.

He showed a lot of things that are now on the computer and not only on paper anymore. This and the above mentioned are noted by Richard Miller as "instrumental changes" not "Fundamental changes." He spoke of The Washington Post Newspaper and how it can be seen online now with moving pictures and news. He also talks about ways that learning and education can be composed online. He shows that this information can be distributed freely and globally.

He goes on to say that the publishing of these online learning needs to happen. They should not simply be put together and posted. They must be attractive enough to draw attention of people to open the online book and read it; Visual representations should be used. He says that there needs to be inspiring spaces. He also says that these ideas  must be shown. He ends with the phrase, "We can do this. We should do this."

I find it very interesting that his dream was to work in a place filled with books, and now he is wanting to take things to a level of technology driven books instead of physical books. I agree that these books and other learning resources on the computer should appeal visually. Chances are, more people will focus on things that attract their attention, therefore, they should be appealing. Work should also be put into the resources that are online. He put a lot of emphasis on these things being easily distributed freely and globally via internet. I think that can be very convenient for those who either choose not to go to a library and those that find the computer more easily accessed and organized.

The Chipper Series and EDM 310 for Dummies (comments and ideas):
The basic message of both of these videos was to work hard and get things done on time. Learning takes work, but it also involves using the appropriate materials and time schedule. An idea I have about creating a video is based on representing the different things that we use in EDM 310. It could start off by showing the class full of students working on their computers. Then as it zooms in on a person the screen could show that they are working on Comments For Kids, then the student could very briefly explain what it is. Next, the video will zoom over to another person and show what they are working on, such as Timetoast, and that person can briefly explain that. This can serve as a primary aid to students in 310 where everything and explanations of things are all in one place and students are the ones explaining how to do a project. The order in which the subjects are represented in the video should be in the order they are used throughout the semester.

Critiques of Smartboards:
Michael Staton: Why Smartboards Are A Dumb Initiative
This blog was basically saying that Smartboards are just another way to spend money and
that they are pointless from a learning aspect. The author was saying that they are not worth
the money and that the things that are used on there does not make anything any more
convenient or easy for the teacher

Bill Ferriter: Why I Hate Interactive Whiteboards
Bill Ferriter also wrote of how the smartboards are a waste of money and not as useful as
people think they are. In fact, he gave his away. He said that he only came up with a couple of
good lesson plans out of it. He tried to make a point that although the students liked it, it did
not help him much. I would have to argue that if he wanted to make a valid point he could
have left that part out because if the Smartboard is going to get the kids more interactive and
interested in what is going on then it has done a lot of its job and he needs to realize that it is
not about making his job easier, it is about making the kids' interaction and excitement in
                      learning better.
opposing idea: This is a link to a blog that is devoted to showing innovative ways
that a Smartboard can be used. Different tools are given that can be used and
websites to go to that can be integrated in the classroom by using the Smartboard.

                                                           http://abunday-smartboard.blogspot.com/

This view shows that there are many ways that Smartboards are useful. There is
nothing negative said about the Smartboard; only ways to bring more interaction to
the students through various games and other things that are focused on helping
students find joy and fun in learning.

Blog Post # 7

In this speech Randy Pausch spoke a lot of interesting and thoughtful things. He first began his introduction into what his dreams were as a child. He mentioned a lot, maybe even all, of the major dreams he had as a child. All of us have had dreams. The only catch is that we tend to push them in the back of our minds and only see them as things that we dreamed about, but could not possibly come true. Randy Pausch saw his dreams in a different light.

After giving a long introduction of what his dreams were, Randy began to share some things that are very rare. His childhood dreams came true. He went on to talk about how each of them came into being. He went big! This portion of the speech led into a major question. This question is, "How can I enable the childhood dreams of others?" He asked himself this question, and he went on to pursue it.

After working with many people at many different companies and industries, he found himself as a professor. Now he could really help enable others childhood dreams by encouraging them and teaching them things that maybe many others did not have a passion for. Here he realized that the students needed to be taught in a different way. What he realized was that students of all ages needed to learn life-long abilities through things that were interesting to them. These ways were through technology and group learning-not all books. This approach allowed the students to do amazing work that surprised him greatly.

At the end of his speech, Randy Pausch brought in some very important words of thought he wanted to leave with others. These thoughts consisted of many things. Here are a few: Have fun, help others, loyalty is a two-way street, listen to feedback and use it, show gratitude, don't complain-just work harder, and find the best in everyone-maybe their good side will come out eventually. One of the main things that he impressed upon me, and surely other listeners, was that he was not afraid to go with his dreams when the opportunities came.

Teacher #2 Summary Post

TEACHER POST SUMMARY #1:
The kids were asked to make a post card and the back of the post card the student wrote what the assignment was about. The card was then mailed to the students’ parents. The parents received in the mail something their children created as artwork for school and also a lesson on the purpose of the project.

MY RESPONSE #1:
This is a great idea! I will definitely keep it in mind to use for my future class. This is also a good way to keep the parents informed, and possibly strike the parents' interest to get more involved with their kids' school work. This seems like a project that will be good for many different age ranges also.

TEACHER POST SUMMARY #2:
In this post he wrote about how he is now a math teacher although it is not his strong point. He goes on to say that the teacher he is tag-teaming with is very helpful. He is also learning this over with the children, although he is one of the teachers. He goes on to say how it is very uncomfortable teaching a subject that is not his best.

MY POST RESPONSE #2:
I have heard something like this said, "A great teacher is one who is always learning." I guess now you got a great chance to learn again! That is very helpful that there is another teacher in the class with you that is also a great help. As teachers, we will never be great at everything no matter how hard we try. This is why teaching is a team job, and it is not about one teacher being better than another at certain subjects. It is about helping one another reach what our best is as a person, even if we are not the "best" at everything. If we were the best at everything, where would our individualism in teaching be?

Blog Post #6

The Networked Student by Wendy Drexler:
This podcast was all about students using networking communication in the 21st century. This video is very informative about what the student that created this blog uses, in particular. What he uses (his PLN) can also easily be shared among other classmates by using a networking system. This networking approach is the same one that also allows him to contact the teacher if he has any questions, and other students can also share what they have discovered.
The question is asked, "Why does the network even need a teacher?". I am sure that many people who have watched the video were also curious of this before he approached the topic. The answers to this question were many. Basically, the teacher is there to, first of all, introduce how to go about learning in a network. If there are any questions about a topic or if the student needs help in the subject the teacher is there for the student to call and ask for help. The teacher is more of a guide and moderator with networking if there is any trouble or confusion.
I definitely think that if the middle school students could do this. They would need a step-by-step guide, somewhere to go for questions, and a thorough lesson on how to network during this "class." But, I think it is surely possible. It might be frustrating and confusing for them at first and their teacher will probably be getting a lot of phone calls, but if they hang in there and are not afraid to ask questions they will be able to do it.
A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment (or PLN)
The 7th grader's PLE seems very similar to our PLN. As far as I understand, she uses her PLE for both school and whatever else she likes to do, such as listen to music. I like how she had all of her Learning Environment objects on the same page and she was able to organize them the way she wanted to.
 The Machine is Changing Us
I enjoyed Dr. Wesch's video. He was very interesting to listen to and he provided a lot of funny video clips. He talks a lot about certain words, such as "whatever," that have been used over the years. He also talks about how to engage students, because now they seem disengaged in class. He talked about the project that he and his students did and also much about Youtube. He was showing that Youtube now gets people involved in letting things know in video form and expressing themselves that way. He also shows it as a valuable tool. In the end, he speaks of going back to "whatever," but in a way that says, "I care. I will do WHATEVER it takes." This video makes me want to find ways to engage my students in learning, and it makes me think that to engage them we must first find what they are interested in and run with it.

C4K#1: Summary Blog Post

ALBERTO'S MANIFESTO
In Alberto’s manifesto, he promises three things. He first promised to be a better student by spending more time focusing on school work, doing homework and turning it in on time, and also not being late. His second manifesto was to be better behaved by staying under control, obeying his teachers, and not bothering others around him. Alberto’s last promise in his manifesto was to be better understandable by communicating with his teachers and letting them know any questions or problems he has.

MY RESPONSE
Hi, my name is Kayla. I am a student at University of South Alabama in Mobile. I am in Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class and you are my student for the week! I think that you have great goals for your manifesto! About homework: It is sooo much easier to do it right when it is given to you. And if you have time during class to so it and get it done it will be such a relief when you get home to know that you have less work to do! My Sophomore year in high school i decided to try to get all of my homework done during free times at school (if there were any that day) and I almost always had my homework finished before I got home! It was awesome! Better behaved: Oh yes, teachers like it when their students listen and behave themselves. I definitely think that we have to make school fun (which is fine!) but sometimes the fun gets out of control if we let it and others get involved to! Communication is Key...my motto is, "if in doubt, ask questions!" Never be afraid to ask questions or ask for your teachers advice.
ALBERTO’S ABOUT ME
Alberto  was born in Monterrey, Mexico and was raised there until he was 7 then he came to the United States. He has four people living in his house. He has one sister and both of his parents. He lives in Missouri. What he likes doing when he is bored is play sports like basketball, soccer, and wrestling. His favorite subject in school is computers. He does not like reading, but he likes science, math, and social studies.

MY RESPONSE
Hello again Alberto! Just to clear things up, there are two Kayla's responding to your messages. It is not the same person over and over! That is very cool that you used to live in Mexico. I'm sure it is cool to see the differences among countries. I have visited Mexico with my parents and sister! We went to Cozumel and the Cayman Islands. I don't know where those are in relation to where you used to live! I have a mom, dad, and one sister who is older than me. My sister and I are both married now and live with our husbands. Neither one of us have kids, but my husband and I do have two puppies, Jayda and Aidan. I don't know much about sports and I am not very good at them. Music is my thing, but I am glad that you find an interest in those sports. I'm glad that you like computers because I am certainly not very good with them. They are cool though. I like science, math and social studies also! They are some of my hardest subjects, but still the most interesting. Have a wonderful day!

Blog Post #5

EAGLE'S NEST RADIO AND CLASS BLOG
I really enjoyed the trip to ancient Rome! This is definitely a good way to get the kids excited about learning by getting into character and telling a story. I like how they used music as a background. I also like how the music changed a few times throughout the Podcast. When the narrator came back on to say something, the music go softer to show that there was a change about to take place. Great!

THE BENEFITS OF PODCAST IN THE CLASSROOM

I really enjoyed this podcast also. I like how he treated the podcast almost as if it was an actual news cast. He used different media's such as music, pictures, and interviewing. This podcast was very informative, yet interesting at the same time because of the way it was approached by using different types of entertainment.

LANGWITCHES
This website made many references to podcasts. For example, a second grade class was learning about animals and they did a podcast on what they were learning. The author also suggests using podcasts for even children as young as the first grade! This could certainly heighten interest in what they are learning and help the children feel like they have a very important place in the class when they get to help in a podcast.

Blog Post #4

WHO IS SCOTT McLEOD:
Dr. McCleod is an Associate Professor at Iowa State University for Education Administration. He is also the Director of UCEA CASTLE. He also had a hand in co-creating the video we watched a couple of weeks ago in EDM, "Did You Know?" He has also received many national awards for his leadership in technology.

The iSCHOOL INITIATIVE:
In the video iSchool, the idea of creating a school that is solely online is brought up. In this video, the thought that creating virtual school will help with the cost tremendously. The iSchool would not require books, paper, copy machines, or even pens and pencils. There would be programs for every class on the device from things such as Starwalk to take a tour of the galaxy to Formulae which would include all formulas used.  The main purposes this would be proposed are massive savings and environment protection. It is said that each student would only pay $150.

I think that this idea represents a lot of unique things that could be useful. However, while I was watching this video, the main question that was going through my mind was, "where will all the teachers go?" I realize that there will be instructors for the classes, however, there are many jobs related to schools. Jobs are already limited these days and honestly I do not see how this would help provide more jobs. Yes, it cuts down the cost for students, but what about teachers salary, secretaries, and janitors. In the end, this program of iSchool is basically students teaching themselves on their own time which can be good in some ways, but not so good in others. Also, if the idea of it being cheaper were true, then why am I paying more for my online classes now compared to the price I pay for regular classes. I am not totally against online learning, but what I am concerned about are the teachers jobs because if this were to happen, there would not necessarily have to be many teachers.

THE LOST GENERATION
This video makes a solid point that certain things will come true if we do not choose to reverse it. These things are exactly opposite from what people would typically want to happen. The interesting thing about this video is that the reader reversed the order of the words and read it exactly backwards. When that happened it clearly made the point of what the video is all about.

ERIC WHITAKER'S VIRTUAL CHOIR
This was definitely different from anything I have ever seen before. I think it was interesting, however it would be hard to hear them as individuals. I also wonder if the sound would be capable enough to be clear.
